Gricel D.
I am a self-declared geek girl. I like to spend time reading, writing, and hanging out with the b-chan. My interests include Victorian history, Jane Austen, shoujo manga, and tea.Education & Experience
I completed an MA in English at Florida International University in December of 2008. While earning my degree, I served as a TA for the FIU Writing department, teaching Writing and Rhetoric I and II. After my term as a TA, I stayed on and taught another 2 courses as an adjunct instructor. I also worked as a writing tutor for the student-athlete center.I had planned on working in the publishing or advertising industry for a few years before returning to school for my MLIS, but decided to continue my education when the recession hit and the market for copywriters and proofreaders went bust.
I found a job as a library assistant at a local vocational college and resigned my posts as instructor and tutor, eager to gain experience in the field of librarianship. I met some great people at this library, but the learning experiences were limited and the hours were few. I returned to job hunting and found a position that fit my needs as a part time student.
I currently work at FIU's Medical Library as a Library Technical Assistant. It's a new department (and a new med school), so there are plenty of learning experiences to be had.
I am interested in several areas of librarianship--academic (reference), YA services, and digital libraries--and have yet to decide on a single concentration. I would actually like to experience all three during my career; I don't like to limit myself and enjoy learning.
